Mountain Winery in Saratoga

Saratoga Mountain Winery

Located in the stunning Saratoga, California, the Mountain Winery stands as a testament to the state’s rich wine history and cultural legacy. Formerly known as the Paul Masson Mountain Winery, this iconic venue is not just famous for its exquisite wines but also for its breathtaking scenery and world-class summer concert series.

A Rich History

The Mountain Winery’s story begins with Paul Masson, a young Frenchman from Burgundy. Born into a family of winemakers, Masson arrived in San Francisco in 1878 with a vision to introduce his knowledge of traditional French winemaking techniques to the New World.

Masson began his journey at the winery of Charles Lefranc, a French expatriate and well-respected winemaker in the Santa Clara Valley. After Lefranc’s death in 1887, Masson took over the Almaden Vineyards and introduced his first sparkling wine in 1892. He quickly earned the title of the “Champagne King of California.”

In 1901, Masson bought a property in Saratoga where he established his winery. Five years later, he built his residence, known as “The Chateau,” on a knoll above the winery. Despite the prohibitionist views of his wife, Louise Masson, the Chateau soon became renowned for its lavish dinner parties.
